$5,000 Goal

The mission of the Elger Bay Elementary School Garden is to teach students about the importance and benefits of gardening, inspire connections with community and nature, and promote healthy choices with fresh food.

School gardens have many benefits in addition to producing food, including:

•Providing a space for learning about plants and nature

•Encouraging good nutrition and the importance of eating fruits and

vegetables

•Creating a positive environment for mental well-being

•Promoting physical activity and being outdoors

Our educational goals are to provide age-appropriate, engaging education for each student by working closely with educators to

identify lesson plans that complement current curricula and teacher

interests. The focus of lessons will span various subject areas

including health, science, and ecology. Examples of topics are the

nutritional benefits of fruits and vegetables, the importance of eating

foods from different food groups, botany, plant-insect interactions

and the importance of pollinators, among other topics. We will also

weave in community health education on topics such as food

insecurity and the importance of community partnerships. We also

plan to form a garden club for students who are interested in

becoming more involved throughout the year and learn more about

horticulture and technical aspects of gardening.
