Our Story

Sherwood was founded in 1957 by eight families whose children with disabilities were excluded from public education. Together, they created Sherwood to prove that their children not only had the right to learn, but the ability to learn.

While opportunities for people with disabilities have expanded significantly since then, barriers to education, employment, and community participation still exist. Sherwood continues the work those eight families started by helping children and adults with disabilities access the support and opportunities they need to live full, independent lives as part of their communities.

In 2025, Sherwood welcomed the Washington State Fathers Network (WSFN), expanding our work to include connection, resources, advocacy, and support for fathers and male caregivers of children with disabilities or special health care needs.

Washington State Fathers Network

Connecting fathers. Strengthening families. Building inclusive communities.

The Washington State Fathers Network empowers fathers and male caregivers of children with disabilities or special health care needs by creating opportunities for connection, support, and advocacy. WSFN connects fathers with one another and with valuable resources and information. Through local chapters, events, peer support, and advocacy training, fathers can share experiences, build relationships, and gain tools to advocate for their children, families, and communities.

Early Supports

Helping children build a strong foundation from the very beginning.

Our Early Supports program provides therapy and education for infants and toddlers, birth to age three, who have developmental disabilities or a diagnosed medical condition that places them at risk for developmental delays. Services are designed around each child and family, with the goal of helping children reach important developmental milestones and giving families the tools and support they need along the way.

Career & Community Connections

Creating opportunities for meaningful employment and community inclusion.

Our Career & Community Connections program supports adults with disabilities who are seeking employment or community inclusion services. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to pursue meaningful employment that recognizes their abilities and provides a competitive wage. Through individualized support, we help people build greater economic independence, connect with their communities, and pursue their personal and professional goals.
